As the hard-partying poster girls of the 1990s, ladettes Sara Cox and Zoe Ball seemed inseparable.

There have been rumours in recent years that the once wild pair had “drifted apart” – but Sara’s having none of it, insisting there’s still a strong bond between the BBC Radio 2 presenters.

She says: “I always have to be careful what I say about Zoe because it always sounds like we’ve drifted apart, big drama, high hell and it’s just not.

“We’ve always supported each other, we just live quite far away from each other.

“We were friends and were out partying and then, you know, kids and life kind of happened. But it’s true that we text each other quite a lot now.”

Sara, 45, says: “We both got to interview Dolly Parton last week, so obviously we were saying how lucky we are. We have the best jobs in the world. And I’ll text if she’s said something funny on the show and she’ll text if she’s listening at tea time.”

The pair also enjoy a Zoom catch-up on Tuesdays along with other Radio 2 stars.

Sara says: “I get to see Reverend Kate Bottley in her living room and I see Gary Davies. And in summer it was great – I could have a good nosey at Michael Ball’s garden and Tony Blackburn has a gold disc on the wall.

“Then one day I was sat on my bed and the dog came and luxuriated in doing a bit of washing of her area. She came in shot just to lick herself in front of Tony Blackburn. I was like, put it away love.”

But as well as presenting her radio show and home-schooling during the pandemic, Sara has also been working on her new TV show Between The Covers, a book club for the stars.

Sara says: “I’m a huge fan of reading.

“In the days before I had kids I used to take six books with me for a fortnight’s holiday. My suitcase used to be full of big trashy novels, maybe a bikini and some flip-flops. It was all I needed.”

She adds: “During the pandemic I’ve felt the need to turn away from the rolling news and the headlines and just escape into a different world.

“So instead of sitting in bed and scrolling through Instagram or spending too long doing my Ocado, I’m reading again.

“It’s really important to make the time to curl up and not look at a screen at night. Just to escape into a good book. I think it’s really good for your mental health – especially at the moment.”

Between The Covers starts Friday, October 9, at 7.30pm on BBC2.
