Tom Fletcher admits he was left “gutted” that the highly-anticipated McFly reunion tour was forced to be cancelled just hours before they boarded their flight to Brazil.
The McFly and Busted frontman, 35, says he and his bandmates were just 48 hours away from hopping on a plane to head to their opening gig in São Paulo when a UK nationwide lockdown was put in place.
Recalling the disappointing moment, Tom exclusively told Mirror Online: “We had this whole year planned on tour.
“Literally before lockdown, we were two days away from getting on a plane to go tour Brazil for three weeks so that was supposed to kick off our whole touring year.”
Tom revealed that the series of global gigs were something he was stoked about after taking a five-year hiatus from performing.
He said: “We had a few years of not travelling around with McFly, we haven’t really been a band for four or five years previous to this, so this year was the first year when we were back.
“It was gutting to have that taken away from us.”
But his hiatus from performing live has not gone to waste as the award-winning singer wrote a series of children’s books, before landing a gig as the new McDonald’s Happy Readers author.
He revealed: “I’ve been writing books for the last few years – when I’ve not been with the band I’ve been writing books, and when you write you have a lot of time with family at home, because you write around you kids.”
He added: “Your family is always a priority so you find ways to slot it in into your family life.”
But although the excitement of a new venture has consumed most of his days, Tom admitted he was missing being up on that stage with his bandmates.
He added: “I felt like this year I was really excited to get back out on the road, and go on tour with the band again. It was so exciting. So to have that taken away was so gutting and really difficult.
“But like everyone else in this industry, it’s such a challenging time. We’ve already recorded our album so we could at least put that out so we were one of the lucky ones for sure.”
