Eddie Van Halen died at just 65 years of age on Tuesday following a long battle with throat cancer.
The co-founder of iconic Eighties rock band Van Halen passed away at St. Johns Hospital in Santa Monica, California, with his wife Janie, son Wolfgang and brother Alex by his side.
Eddie’s condition is said to have deteriorated over the last 72 hours with doctors discovering his cancer had spread to his brain and other organs, according to TMZ.
Following the star’s tragic death, his touching final social media post has been revealed.
Eddie’s final update on both Twitter and Instagram was a loving birthday message to his brother and fellow band member Alex Van Halen on May 8.
The musician shared a black and white snap of him and his sibling posing, with Alex proudly putting his arm around Eddie’s shoulders.
Eddie captioned the tribute for his brother: “Happy Birthday Al!! Love Ya!! #vanhalen #alexvanhalen #birthday #may #drummer #musician #musicians #family #rock #classicrock #rockband #love.”
Eddie’s devastated son broke the tragic news to fans on Twitter this evening.
“I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning.
“He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift.
“My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss.
“I love you so much, Pop,” shared Wolfgang, who joined Van Halen as a bassist in 2006.
As news of Eddie’s death broke, tributes began to pour in from the entertainment industry.
The star’s former bandmate Sammy Hagar, who played guitar with the band from 2003 to 2005 lead tributes, simply writing: “Heartbroken and speechless. My love to the family,” alongside a picture of himself and Eddie on a private jet.
KISS’ Gene Simmons took to Twitter to write: “My heart is broken. Eddie was not only a Guitar God, but a genuinely beautiful soul. Rest in peace, Eddie!”
Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea said: “Oh man, bless his beautiful creative heart. I love you Eddie Van Halen, an LA boy, a true rocker.
