One Direction won the hearts of the nation when they merged together to become the next boy band on the X Factor 2010.
The former pop group, which was formed by Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Harry Styles and Zayn Malik, became a worldwide sensation under the watchful eyes of Simon Cowell.
As the ex-band celebrate their 10th anniversary today, we take a look back at their solo auditions – from tantrums to standing ovations.
Having gone on to pursue their solo careers, who knew they’d become the next biggest boy band?
Liam Payne
Liam Payne’s X Factor audition aired on 15 June 2010 when he aged 16.
He had previously competed on the show in 2008 and got through to the judges’ houses, where Simon was his mentor.
But the head judge didn’t believe Liam was ready for the singing competition at the time, and let him go.
However the persistent youngster returned for another go two years later, and this time caught the eye of former judge Cheryl, who he later began dating.
The heartthrob crooned for Cheryl, who would eventually become his girlfriend and the mother of his son, Bear.
Liam wowed the judges with his rendition of Cry Me A River, before later being put together with the rest of his former boy band in bootcamp.
Zayn Malik
Zayn Malik, 27, performed Mario’s Let Me Love You during his first time on the stage in 2010.
He started as a shy teenager from Bradford aged 17 before becoming a huge pop sensation with the band.
He may have nailed his first song, but his mum Trisha Malik admitted in 2013 that her son had to be persuaded to go to the audition.
Speaking to BBC News, Trisha Malik said: “On the morning of the audition Zayn didn’t want to go. He chickened out, saying, ‘Can’t I just leave it?'”
And Zayn threw a tantrum when he got through to bootcamp auditions as he refused to learn a dance routine.
Zayn had a hatred of dancing, according to his mum.
Viewers saw Zayn was definitely not a fan of dancing as he had to be coaxed back onto stage by Simon Cowell after refusing to learn the routine.
“He hated dancing but loved singing. He used to sing until three o’clock in the morning and I often used to have to ask him to turn it down,” his mum added.
Niall Horan
The Irish singer, 26, caught the judges’ attention with his strong personality and big ambitions.
In his X Factor VT, Niall said he wanted to become a “big singer” in the world of Beyonce and Justin Bieber.
The teenager said he wanted to “sell out arenas” – which little did he know he would go on to do with One Direction.
He sang So Sick by Ne-Yo and was described as an “Irish Justin Bieber” by Louis Walsh.
Niall, who was 16 at the time, was stopped by Simon Cowell halfway through the audition.
He told Niall: “I think you’re unprepared, I think you came with the wrong song. You’re not as good as you thought you were – but I still like you.”
Simon and Louis had an argument over the star, with Louis arguing: “He’s likeable.”
Young Niall went on to get through to bootcamp after Katy Perry gave the last “yes”.
Louis Tomlinson
Louis Tomlinson stepped foot onto the stage in front of Louis Walsh, Nicole Scherzinger and Simon Cowell.
He sang Hey There Delilah by White T and the judges put him through without hesitation.
The teenager received a standing ovation from the crowd, and was grinning with happiness.
Louis was later put together with the rest of his former group and the rest became history.
Harry Styles
Cheeky teenager Harry Styles worked in a bakery at the time of his first audition, and was ready to go back to college.
He said he’d “always” wanted to audition, but was too young.
The star, who auditioned aged 16, sang Isn’t She Lovely by Stevie Wonder.
Nicole Scherzinger told him he had a “beautiful voice”.
While Simon said with a bit of vocal coaching, he could see potential.
And it seems Harry proved to be just as good as Simon imagined as he went on to merge with the other 1D boys.
The band were put together on July 23, 2010 by Simon Cowell.
Each one of the boys made it to bootcamp, but were formed into a band after being told their solo performances weren’t enough.
Simon told them: “Guys, this if a lifeline. You have got to work 10, 12, 14 hours a day, every single day and take this opportunity.
“You’ve got a real shot here guys.”
The newly-formed boy band went on to sing at Simon’s house before going through to the live auditions.
They came third place on X Factor behind runner-up Rebecca Ferguson and winner Matt Cardle.
Since then, the 1D lads went on to become a worldwide sensation, gaining a huge fan base and selling five studio albums together.
They took a hiatus in August 2015, allowing all members to pursue other projects.
It came after Zayn quit the band in March that year.
But to celebrate their milestone anniversary today, the five heartthrobs revealed they will be launching a celebration website, complete with a special video made for their fans to honour the special moment.
The website has interactive playlists available for fans, as well as activations across digital platforms.
The launch takes place today – marking a decade since the boys first got together on the hit ITV talent show.
They have been on a break for four years but Louis confirmed the band will get back together in the near future.
It will be music to fans’ ears after years and years of their loyal admirers begging for the squad to reunite and go on tour again.
