Strictly: Kym Marsh unveiled as contestant on BBC Breakfast

Kym Marsh has been announced as the second star joining the Strictly 2022 line-up.

The former Coronation Street actress, 46, announced the news on BBC Breakfast this morning.

She said: “I’ve considered doing Strictly for years but the timings never worked out. I’m so delighted that this year they have! I’m a huge fan of the show and can’t believe I’m going to go from watching at home in my pyjamas to actually dancing in front of the judges in a glittery dress, it’s unreal!”

Speaking to BBC Breakfast hosts Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty from outside her hotel room, she said that she had a few friends who had been on the show who had given her some tips.

“They loved it, they have had the best time,” she said. “What they said is that what they have learnt has just been incredible. I’m really looking forward to it – I’m nervous, but I’m really looking forward to it.”

The Morning Live presenter will be joining actor Will Mellor, who was the first celebrity confirmed to be taking part this year.

The Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps star, 46, said that he was “so chuffed” to be part of the show but admitted that it was “totally out of his comfort zone”.

“I’m honestly so chuffed to be taking part in Strictly Come Dancing this year,” he said. “Not going to lie, it’s totally out of my comfort zone and I know it will be a huge challenge but that’s what life is all about.

“This is also my Mum’s favourite show and she’s had a really tough few years so I’m doing this is for her as well. Bring it on!”

There are some changes to this year’s Strictly, with pro dancers Oti Mabuse and Aljaz Skorjanec quitting the show.

Aljaz’s wife Janette Manrara will continue to host It Takes Two.

Meanwhile, Bruno Tonioli announced in May that he was leaving the show after 18 years as a judge on the panel.

It came amid much speculation he wouldn’t be back after being replaced by Anton Du Beke due Covid travelling constraints.

Speaking on The One Show, Bruno shared the news that he wouldn’t be back and said it was “his decision”.

Bruno will remain on the US version of the show, Dancing With The Stars, where he is also a judge.

Speaking on the show, Bruno said of juggling both series amid the coronavirus pandemic: “It was impossible, it really was because the rules changed. Getting through airports was not what it used to be.”

On Strictly, he said: “I miss it so much,” before adding: “Because of the travel situation I cannot guarantee I’m going to be there.

“They need continuity, it’s my decision and I think Anton has done a fantastic job and he deserves to be on that seat.”

He went on: “Anton you have done a fantastic job, you deserve it. Carry on, do me proud but you’ve done it for me anyway.”
