Simon Cowell is already back working – and is set to return to TV next month as long as he follows the doctor’s orders to rest after breaking his back.
The X Factor judge is known in the business as a workaholic and was sending emails from his hospital bed on an iPad just hours after he had emergency surgery on his back.
The 60-year-old fell off a new electric bike he was trying out and broke his back in several places at home in Malibu.
A source close to Cowell said he was resigned to missing the America’s Got Talent shows this week but hoped to have recovered for future shows in the US and UK.
The source added: “Nothing is definitive as yet but we very much hope Simon will be well enough to attend both the AGT final on September 23 and the BGT live final in the UK in October.
“The semi finals of Britain’s Got Talent clash with AGT filming so he was never going to be able to return to the UK for those shows in the coming weeks, but we are still looking at whether he can appear remotely.
“The accident has thrown the planning up in the air for the time being, but provided Simon listens to the doctors and gets some rest in the next few weeks, we hope to see him back on screen soon.
“He has been working on his iPad in hospital but he knows he has to take it easy for a while, he has had quite the scare.”
The Mirror told today how Cowell narrowly missed breaking his spinal cord “by a centimetre” which would may have meant he was paralysed.
But the fall was serious as his back was broken in three places and he required a metal rod put in to fix it during his operation.
Cowell thanked the medical staff who treated him in Los Angeles following the bike accident on social media.
The music mogul and talent show judge spoke for the first time since his accident and urged others to “stay safe” as he recovers in hospital.
He said: “Some good advice… If you buy an electric trail bike, read the manual before you ride it for the first time. I have broken part of my back. Thank you to everyone for your kind messages. And a massive thank you to all the nurses and doctors. Some of the nicest people I have ever met. Stay safe everyone Simon.”
In the US, new America’s Got Talent judge Sofia Vergara posted a photo to Instagram showing her and fellow judges Howie Mandel and Heidi Klum on set of the reality show during a rehearsal.
The trio were pictured pointing to Cowell’s empty chair while sending him well wishes.
His close friend Amanda Holden, 49, who is a judge on BGT also posted about Simon on social media.
