Movie favourite Harrison Ford is to make a fifth and final outing as adventurer Indiana Jones, Disney confirmed today.
The long-rumoured film will be released in July 2022 and will be the first in the franchise not to be directed by Steven Spielberg, 73.
Wolverine spin-off Logan and Oscar-nominated biopic Ford V Ferrari director James Mangold, 56, is helming the project, which has been held up in production due to the pandemic.
Producer Frank Marshall recently said: “There will only be one Indiana Jones, and that’s Harrison Ford.
“We are working on the script.”
The 78-year-old actor first brought the iconic character to the big screen in 1981’s Raiders Of The Lost Ark, followed by Indiana Jones and the Temple Of Doom in 1984, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989 and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008.
Despite his advancing years, Harrison has always kept the door open to returning to the character, who is one of his fanbase’s favourite roles.
During an interview in 2013 he said: “We’ve seen the character develop and grow over a period of time.
“It’s perfectly appropriate and OK for him to come back again with a great movie around him.”
Dismissing the suggestion the fedora hat-wearing archaeology professor needed to be hugely action-orientated Harrison added the character has many other crucial traits which made him so popular.
He said: “To me, what was interesting about the character was that he prevailed, that he had courage, that he had wit, that he had intelligence, that he was frightened and that he still managed to survive.
“That, I can do.”
Unhappy at rumours Jurassic World star Chris Pratt, 41, was said to be stepping into the role of Indiana, Harrison further cemented his intention not to give up the coveted part to a younger rival in a further interview last year on America’s Today Show.
He said: “Don’t you get it?
“I’m Indiana Jones.
“When I’m gone, he’s gone.
“It’s easy.”
During the Disney Investor Day announcement, they also revealed a further 10 Star Wars series spin-offs and 10 Marvel series’ would be coming to Disney+
