Wimbledon organizers said Friday the Grand Slam event will return in 2021, with or without fans in attendance.
England’s grass-court tournament was canceled this year for the first time since World War II due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Wimbledon preparing for three scenariosThe All England Lawn Tennis Club said it is planning for three potential spectator scenarios: full capacity, reduced capacity or “behind closed doors.”
“Staging The Championships in 2021 is our number one priority and we are actively engaged in scenario planning in order to deliver on that priority,” chief executive Sally Bolton said in a statement.
Organizers no doubt will keep a close eye on developments at the 2021 Australian Open, scheduled for January in Melbourne.
The defending champions from Wimbledon 2019 are Novak Djokovic of Serbia and Simona Halep of Romania. The tournament is scheduled for June 28 to July 11, 2021.
