US footballer Megan Rapinoe engaged to girlfriend and basketball player Sue Bird

Footballer Megan Rapinoe is engaged to her long-term girlfriend.

Seattle Storm basketball player Sue Bird shared the happy news to her Instagram page, showing Megan on one knee poolside.

While Sue, 40, faces away from the camera, football ace Megan, 35, wears a big grin as she slips the ring onto her new fiancée's finger.

Sue left the image to do the talking, not including a caption.

Megan is best known for leading the US Women's Football team to victory in last year's World Cup, while Sue is renowned on the court, picking up her fourth WNBA title earlier in 2020.

They first became an item back in 2016, and have been dating since.

The announcement overjoyed fans, who flooded the comments section with kind words and messages of congratulations.

"Wow...CONGRATS to y’all!" one offered.

Another wrote: "Omgggggggggg congrats!!!! Love you two."

A third gushed: "AYYYEEEEEEEEEE!!! CONGRAAAAAAAAAAAATSSSS!"

"OMG THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY!!!!!! CONGRATS!!" a fourth chimed in.

A fifth said they had "heart explosions", while others just left strings of heart emojis.

Meanwhile, over on Twitter, one excited user told followers: "Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe getting engaged is the one and only bright spot of 2020."

Another tweeted: "Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe are engaged, which means I'm going to spend the evening crying into ~several~ glasses of wine."

Last year not only saw the Megan-led States dribble to victory in the World Cup, she was also awarded the Ballon d'Or Feminin.

Her acceptance speech famously saw her call out sexism and homophobia in sport, saying: "On the one hand, I am a very good footballer.

"On the other hand, my action off the field attracts support because people understand that I'm trying to find solutions to the problems of society."

And she drew criticism from the likes of President Donald Trump during the World Cup when she refused to sing the US national anthem.
