Last Friday, October 2, gamers were finally able to get their hands on Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. Despite the number “4” prominently displayed in the title, it’s actually the eighth game in the series. It launched for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (sorry, Nintendo fans), though there has been no confirmation that it’s coming to next-gen consoles.
While there’s still no official confirmation, there are other indicators that the game will see a release on the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X and Series S, namely an ESRB rating for the game on Xbox Series X. And if its coming to Series X, it’s certainly coming to Series S, and there’s no good reason that it wouldn’t show up on PlayStation 5.
A next-gen port of Crash 4 is such an accepted idea at this point that, if you google the title, even Google’s little summary lists the next-gen consoles under the platforms section. So why haven’t we heard anything from Activision? Well, the current-gen version launched less than a week ago, so they’re likely dedicating all of their focus to making sure that goes smoothly. Chances are we’ll get the official word in the very near future.
Speaking of the various consoles, there’s still that lingering rumor that the game will come to the Nintendo Switch. It all originally stemmed from someone digging around in the source code on the game’s website and finding mention of Nintendo’s console. While there isn’t anything new to report on that front, the rumor hasn’t gone away. Plus, it makes all sorts of sense.
The Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy was released for PlayStation 4 before eventually hitting Xbox One, Switch and PC. In that case, Sony had a timed exclusive. While that isn’t the case here, it still seems likely that Activision will eventually release the title for Switch and PC.
The game has earned some excellent reviews, so if you have even a fleeting interest in the series, it’s probably worth checking out. At the same time, if you haven’t picked it up yet and you were lucky enough to snag a pre-order for a next-gen console, it might be worth waiting for that new version. After all, we’re just a little over a month away.
