Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything: The Genie Patron Resummoned In Wizards Of The Coast’s Upcoming Book

Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything is set to release this fall and is one of the biggest additions to the game that we’ve seen yet. Already, the book is confirmed to be a major update to the existing rules present in D&D 5E, adding a new racial stat system and 18 new subclasses, amongst a plethora of other changes.

The Genie patron has made a previous introduction as one of the Unearthed Arcana playtest material, and honestly, it hasn’t changed much. However, the article below will cover any and all changes made to cover it properly.

Warlocks who have chosen the Genie have made a pact with the rarest and most powerful of genies: a Noble Genie. These genies often wield power that rivals that of lesser deities, laying claim to vast fiefdoms throughout the Elemental Planes. They delight in tricking mortals, making them a risky patron.

When you make this pact at 1st level, choose your genie or determine it randomly from one of the following: Dao (Earth), Djinni (Air), Efreeti (Fire), and Marid (Water).

Also at first level, Genie’s Vessel gives the player a magical vessel that acts as a small measure of the genie’s power, as well as the warlock’s spellcasting focus. There are a few vessels to choose from, such as an oil lamp or a ring with a compartment, but the vessel can be anything significant to the specific genie that the pact has been made with.

The vessel can also be used in two ways, which are represented by the Bottled Respite and Genie’s Wrath abilities. Bottled Respite allows the warlock to use an action to be magically transported inside the vessel. Inside the vessel is a 20-ft radius room with a 20 ft ceiling, furnished comfortably. You can hear everything outside your vessel and can remain in it for a number of hours equal to twice your proficiency bonus unless it is destroyed or you choose to exit.

Genie’s Wrath allows you to deal extra damage equal to your proficiency bonus once per turn. This damage corresponds to each of the genie types: Dao (bludgeoning), Djinni (thunder), Efreeti (fire), Marid (cold). The vessel’s AC equals your spell save DC, is immune to poison and psychic damage, and has a number of HP equal to your warlock level plus your proficiency bonus.

The Genie patron also bestows a set of spells not normally available for warlocks to take that will count as warlock spells. Each genie type corresponds to a different set of spells. Marid, for example, can cast Fog Cloud at first level, while Efreeti can cast Burning Hands.

Amongst a rather stellar expanded spell list that includes spells such as Greater Invisibility and Fireball is the Wish spell, which is included for genies of all types.

At 6th level, Genie patron warlocks are granted access to Elemental Gift, which gives you resistance to the damage type associated with your genie. In addition, you gain a bonus action which can be used to give yourself a flying speed of 30 ft which lasts for 10 minutes. This can be used a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, after which you must finish a long rest in order to regain them.

10th level brings the Sanctuary Vessel feature, which expands the Genie’s Vessel feature. When you use Bottled Respite to transport inside your vessel, you can also choose up to 5 creatures that are also drawn in with you. As a bonus action, you can also expel any number of creatures from the vessel. In addition, any creatures who spend at least 10 minutes in the vessel gain the benefits of a short rest and anyone can add their proficiency bonus to the number of HP they regain if they spend Hit Die.

The final ability at level 14 is Limited Wish. This ability allows you to entreat your patron to grant you a small wish. Choose the effect from any spell of 6th level or lower from any class with a casting time of 1 action to replicate. You don’t need to meet any of the requirements from that spell, including costly components. Once you use this feature you can’t use it again for 1d4 long rests.

Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything releases worldwide on November 17th.
