Maisie Smith has given her verdict on why she thinks she's misunderstood by the public.

The Strictly Come Dancing contestant, 19, ended up in the bottom two for the second time, and thinks she knows why.

The EastEnders star - who is this year's youngest celeb on the hit BBC One dance show - was saved by judges Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood, and Anton Du Beke last weekend.

Her routine with pro partner Gorka Marquez landed her in the dance off against Caroline Quentin, leaving her confidence slightly knocked.

She told OK! mag: "People have said they can't warm to me on Strictly, but I'm so nervous and that can be interpreted as arrogance."

She added: "I'll either go quiet, or I'll go over the top to put on a confident front. It's hard to not let it affect you. I do have to genuinely remind myself to just trust myself, and be me."

After landing in the bottom two with Gorka, Maisie reportedly cried all night.

"It knocked my confidence. I’ve been trying so hard – we all have," she said. "But I’ve had to keep reminding myself not to take it so personally..."

She added: "Honestly, when I heard my name, it was the scariest feeling. I’ve never been in such a scary situation.

"It wasn’t a nice feeling."

Maisie and Gorka have formed a strong friendship during their time together on the dance show so far, with Maisie admitting that Gorka always send her snaps of his daughter.

Gorka is a proud dad to daughter Mia, whom he shares with girlfriend Gemma Atkinson.

"He [Gorka] shows me pictures of their daughter Mia every day. Once an hour I'll get a new picture of her. He adores that baby so much.

"You can tell he's been missing her. He can see them, but he can't go near them.

"He knows he can't hug Mia and she wouldn't understand why, so I think he's not seeing them in the flesh as a result."
