Sofia Vergara has insisted she was in on Ellen DeGeneres' joke after a clip of the presenter making fun of her accent went viral.

In the video Ellen, 62, is seen poking fun and discussing Sofia's ability to speak the English language.

Now The Modern Family star, 48, has taken to Twitter to reassure her fans that she "was never the victim" and the pair were "just having fun".

She said: "I was never a victim guys. I was always in on the joke."

Alongside her post she shared a clip of her and Ellen making fun of each other during CoverGirl commercials in 2015.

In the video Ellen jokes about Sofia's heavily accented English.

In the clip Ellen jokes: "They give her the hardest lines too because we have to describe what's in the CoverGirl makeup and she has such a hard time pronouncing any of the ingredients."

Sofia fired back: "I think because you are much more famous than me and older than me so they give you priority, and you read the script first and then you're the one that makes me say those words, because there's no way.

A gigging Ellen replied: "They make her look pretty and make me say the important information."

Ellen has come under fire this summer after claims were made by former staff that there has been a "toxic" atmosphere, bullying and mean behaviour on the set of her talk show.

In one interview, an anonymous worker claimed the show is similar to the set up of Meryl Streep's 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada, in which she played a magazine editor who terrorised her staff.

The woman told the radio hosts: "I worked there for a little over a year.

"At the show there is a culture of competition. You are constantly reminded that the show is this behemoth, and it will be there with or without you.

"It's kind of like The Devil Wears Prada. Everyone is trying to make it to the [end of the] year.

"It's just a badge of honour to have that and have it on your resume."

In a memo obtained by Us Weekly on July 30, Ellen apologised to her employees on the show.

Ellen is said to have written: "On day one of our show, I told everyone in our first meeting that The Ellen DeGeneres Show would be a place of happiness – no one would ever raise their voice, and everyone would be treated with respect.
