Sir Sean Connery's last photo with wife Micheline as he battled dementia before death

The James Bond actor's widow said she and her husband had the 'most wonderful life' but in their last few months together 'dementia took its toll'

Sir Sean Connery is seen clasping wife Micheline Roquebrune's hand in the last photograph of them taken before his death.

The loving picture sees the pair on their 45th wedding anniversary in May.

The James bond legend, who was revealed to be suffering from dementia, gazes into the camera while adoring wife Micheliene, 91, gives him an affectionate look.

Sir Sean lived his last years with Micheleine and other close family members in the Bahamas where he died at the age of 90.

The final touching photo of the couple emerged just after widow Micheline paid tribute to her partner, who she described as a 'gorgeous model of a man.'

Describing how Sir Sean's final months were affected by his dementia battle, Micheline said: "It was no life for him. He was not able to express himself latterly.

"At least he died in his sleep and it was just so peaceful. I was with him all the time and he just slipped away. It was what he wanted.

"He had dementia and it took its toll on him. He got his final wish to slip away without any fuss," she told the Mail.

Micheline, a Moroccan-French painter, met the Scotsman at a golf tournament in 1970, where their eyes met across a dinner table.

The actor called Micheline 'ma cherie' but the conversation didn't get much further given the language barrier between them.

Recalling the first time she laid eyes on Sean, Michelien previously said: "I saw this man from the back, and of course, he had a fine physique. But that first day I didn’t know who he was or anything about him. Then I dreamed I saw this man. I was in his arms. And I thought ‘At last, peace’. The next day I went back to the tournament and that was that!"

However, the pair were said to have had an immediate and intense connection with Sir Sean asking the artist to meet him in Marbella where their love affair began.

Speaking after his death, Micheline described her husband as 'gorgeous' and said they 'had a wonderful life together.'

"He was a model of a man. It is going to be very hard without him, I know that. But it could not last for ever and he went peacefully," she admitted.

Michieline was the film star's second wife and stayed with him after his affair with singer Lynsey de Paul was uncovered.

The pair married in 1975 and in the 1990s moved to Bahamas to live full time.

This weekend Sir Sean's son Jason revealed that his father had died at his home in Nassau.

Tributes were paid by fans, actors and politicians to the much-loved film star, whose acting career spanned four decades.

Fellow Bond actor Pierce Brosnan joined Daniel Craig, George Lazenby and the family of the late Sir Roger Moore in paying their respects to the original 007.

The Irish actor said: "Sir Sean Connery, you were my greatest James Bond as a boy, and as a man who became James Bond himself. You cast a long shadow of cinematic splendour that will live on forever.

"You led the way for us all who followed in your iconic foot steps. Each man in his turn looked to you with reverence and admiration as we forged ahead with our own interpretations of the role.
