Kelly Clarkson says at one point in her marriage to Brandon Blackstock, she realised "this isn't happiness".

The singer, 38, filed for divorce from her husband of seven years Brandon in June earlier this year, after realising she wanted out of their union.

Appearing on her self-titled talk show via video call, Kelly chatted to author Glennon Doyle and singer Alicia Keys.

Kelly quizzed Glennon on her latest book, which goes into detail about how her first marriage to Craig Melton crumbled, before she fell in love with football player Abby Wambach.

Reflecting on her own divorce process, Kelly said: "Glennon, you write about the fallout from your divorce — I'm obviously going through one right now."

She added: "It's horrible. There are so many hard parts. The hardest for me is the kids ... I think, as women especially, we're trained to take it all on and deal with it and you're fine. But it's your babies that you worry about."

The singer shares daughter River, five, and son Remington, four, with her ex-husband, and admits "it's always the kids" she's worried about.

Brandon also has two children from a previous marriage.

Glennon said: "We're trained to believe to avoid at all costs a broken family."

The author recalled staying in her first marriage for the sole sake of her daughter.

"We've all been trained to believe a good mother is a liar," she added. "I didn't leave a marriage in spite of being a good mother; I left because I am a good mother."

Glennon's words resonated within Kelly, who responded: "That's what I needed to see to make a step in my own life."

Kelly admitted that during her seven-year union with Brandon, she realised: "This isn't happiness, and we both deserve better."

She added: "That line so hit home for me: I don't want this for everyone in this scenario right now."

It comes as Kelly won primary custody of her children, according to court documents.

Now Brandon has reportedly filed legal documents requesting $436,000 (£327,274) in monthly total for spousal and child support following the judge's ruling - according to TMZ.

A source told PEOPLE of the move: "Brandon's been equally unreasonable in his requests for child and spousal support, as well as attorney fees."

The source added: "Kelly's offered to pay for all the kids' expenses, but Brandon seems to think he is entitled to and needs $301K in spousal support and $135K in child support per month."

The pair are set to share joint custody of their kids, though Kelly will have the primary physical custody of the children in Los Angeles where she lives.

Brandon will have their kids on the first, third and fifth weekends every month.
