Simon Cowell took up bike riding to get fit after his last horror accident

The talent show guru has broken his back after coming off an electric bike he was testing out at his Malibu mansion

Simon Cowell started cycling to improve his fitness after he ended up in hospital following a previous fall at home three years ago.

Today it was revealed that the 60-year-old talent show mogul had broken his back while coming off an electric bicycle.

The father-of-one had been testing the bike in the courtyard of his Malibu mansion when the accident happened. After he was rushed to A&E, a representative for the star said he's in 'safe hands' and is awaiting surgery later today.

Simon vowed to take up exercise and embark on a healthier lifestyle after he suffered a frightening fall in 2017.

The X Factor guru had to be stretchered out of his London mansion by parademics who came to his aid when he fell down his stairs on the way to the kitchen in the early hours of the morning.

Simon said the terrifying incident was a 'wake up call' that made him change his ways.

"They think I fainted because I had low blood pressure and so I have got to take really good care of myself to sort that out," he revealed.

"I’m OK now. In a way, it was a wake-up call. It wasn’t the end of the world – but a bit embarrassing.

“If I’m honest with you, I was probably over-tired," he told The Sun.

After he made a full recovery, Simon was seen whizzing round the streets of Los Angles on one of the two 28mph battery powered bikes he purchased to kick-start his fitness regime.

He splashed out £2,000 on each bike, leaving one in London and taking the other to his second home in the States.

"The bikes might be electric but it still has more benefits than getting driven to his desk. It’s a start," a source told The Sun.

Simon kept up his weight loss and revealed this year that he's shared over four stone since his accident.

He was spotted out bike riding in lockdown with his partner Lauren Silverman and their six-year-old son Eric.

The trio were spotted enjoying a family outing in Malibu on their bikes with Simon wearing a face mask along with his signature aviator sunglasses.

As he was testing out his latest e-bike today, Simon took a nasty fall.

A representative of Simon's revealed: "Simon had a fall from his bike on Saturday afternoon whilst testing his new electric bike in the courtyard at his house in Malibu with his family."
