Simon Cowell was not impressed with comedian Peter Kay's string of parodies that took inspiration from reality TV talent shows, it is claimed.
The music-mogul, 60, is said to have thought Kay's shows Britain's Got the Pop Factor and Possibly a New Celebrity Jesus Christ Soapstar Superstar Strictly on Ice "undermined his success."
Not only was Simon annoyed that Peter, 47, took aim at his portfolio of series but he was also infuriated that narrator Peter Dickinson took part, The Sun reports.
Kay is said to have told Dickson: “He hated it. Hated everything about it. Thought we were taking the p***, undermining his success. He sent me a really stinking email.”
Kay reportedly added: “He was particularly upset about your involvement and I felt a bit guilty about that as I had given you my word, when we met, that it was an affectionate parody.”
But apparently Simon had a change of heart after the show went on air, with Kay telling Dickinson: “After the reviews came in and the praise for it was universal, he decided it was OK. Called me to apologise. Nowt as queer as folk, eh?”
The claims emerge in Dickinson’s new book, Voiceover Man.
It comes after Kay's eagerly awaited comeback tour had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The Bolton star had been due to appear at Dance for Life charity gigs across the country but the shows have been postponed in light of the new guidance on mass gatherings.
Speaking to fans on the cancellation, he announced in March: "Obviously this is disappointing news but well and truly justified given the circumstances.
"We'll get through this, together and then we'll all have a great big dance for life.
"Stay safe and look after yourselves and the people around you," advised the funnyman.
The star had been scheduled to host his Dance For Life shows in London, Liverpool and Manchester for Cancer Research UK this April.
The comedian's reps added to his initial cancellation announcement and said: "Due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak and following Government advice, it is with deep regret that the forthcoming Peter Kay's Dance For Life shows are being postponed. "We are looking to schedule the shows so please hold onto your tickets as they will be valid for the new dates. "We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but the safety of the public is paramount."
