Serious Sam 4’s Release Date Pushed Back To September 24th As Devolver Digital Continue Their Strong 2020

Serious Sam 4, developed by Croatian devs Croteam and published by Devolver Digital, was originally set to release later in August. That date has now been pushed back to September 24th.

Citing no particular reason for the push back, it’s likely because of the general global climate and issues with working from home over the last few months. Despite the extra delay, like those in the know always say, better a polished game than a rushed one. It’s not like fans have been waiting for the game since 2013 or anything…

Croteam is the same team responsible for the previous Serious Sam titles and developed their own Serious Engine to power the games. Trailers for Serious Sam 4, particularly the one featuring reworked soundtracks from the original Serious Sam games, look pretty great so far.

If the second gameplay trailer is anything to go by, it’s clear how much progress has been made on the game since it was announced and received its first teaser trailers. The gunplay looks slick, the animations are much cleaner, and Zealot’s eyes are glowing.

As a concept, Serious Sam 4 has been in the works since 2013. Halfway through development, some of the game mechanics (the jammer which disables objects around the player) were transformed into another game, The Talos Principle. The writer of Talos is returning for Serious Sam 4.

Serious Sam 4 hasn’t been without its PR problems. The game is releasing on Steam on September 24th but not for PlayStation or Xbox. That’s because there’s a signed exclusivity deal with Google Stadia – a platform that is still struggling to perform.

Players are a little annoyed by this – Serious Sam is the type of game that works very well on console. Serious Sam 3 (which released all the way back in 2001, by the way) was a hit on PlayStation and Xbox at the time. A true nostalgic classic, even if the old games do feel quite dated now.

Console players have been waiting a long time to dive back into the crazy world of Serious Sam. They’ll have to wait a little longer. At least someway into 2021, although no specific date for a console release has been confirmed by Devolver or Croteam at this point.
