Sam Smith says they have 'girl breasts and girl thighs' - and isn't always pronoun-perfect.

The singer came out as non-binary back in 2019, a groundbreaking move that grabbed headlines around the world.

The Oscar-winner has been talking about the decision and what it meant after grappling with their identity for so long.

It is a year since Sam asked to be addressed as 'they' instead of 'he' or 'him'.

The star has been speaking to the Sunday Times more than 12 months on - but says it hasn't been a totally straightforward transition.

“I mess up, my mum messes up - my family messes up,” Sam said when discussing the pronouns.

The 28-year-old isn't offended when others get it wrong, adding: "When people correct themselves it is a wonderful feeling, because people try.”

The Too Good At Goodbyes hitmaker continued: “I always had body dysmorphia.

"As I started to address that, I started to address my gender and realised that I was holding myself to these ideals of how a man should look.

"As I looked into it, I did therapy, I realised there was more to it. I have girl’s thighs and I have girl breasts too.

"It started to awaken this conversation that had always been in the back of my mind.”

Sam wants to have kids before they turn 34 - but is in no immediate hurry.

They say adoption and surrogacy are options going forward.

The singer identifies as gay and has considered a sex change in the past, and now wants to not be identified by gender.

Last month Sam got a ticking off for dancing in Freedom bar in Soho, London - breaking strict social distancing guidelines.

A source said: "Security headed over to their table and asked them to sit down as it's banned due to the pandemic.
