Roman Kemp says he is often mistaken for being a family member of the notorious – and murderous – Kray twins.
The 27-year-old Radio DJ and former I’m A Celeb contestant also said cab drivers have been known to make odd reference to the legendary East End gangsters, Ronnie and Reggie Kray.
Roman’s 58-year-old father, Martin Kemp, and his 60-year-old uncle, Gary Kemp, portrayed the Kray twins in the 1990 film The Krays which dramatised the life and crimes of the London gangsters.
The association with the notorious gang leaders appears to have made some taxi drivers to believe that the Global FM star is somehow a gangster himself.
Speaking on Jessie Ware's Table Manners podcast, Roman explained: “I’ve had cab drivers take me home and be like, ‘Don’t worry about paying’.
“And I’m like, ‘Why?’
“And they say, ‘The Krays and that. I was friends with Reg and Ronnie, it’s all good’.
“People think my dad and uncle are somehow related to them.”
Ronnie Kray died in prison following a heart attack and aged 61 on 17 March 1995, while brother Reggie died on 1 October 2000 – eight weeks after being released from prison on compassionate grounds due to suffering bladder cancer.
Both men were sentenced to life behind bars in 1969 after being convicted of organised crime in the East End of London in the ‘50s and ‘60s.
The fearsome duo were involved in murder, armed robbery, arson, protection rackets and assaults and were heads of a gang at the time known as The Firm.
But the pair were also glamorised as celebrities in the ‘60s as they rubbed shoulders with Hollywood stars.
