Ringo Starr leads celeb birthday messages for Paul McCartney as singer turns 80

Sir Ringo Starr sent 'peace and love' to his pal and former bandmate Sir Paul McCartney as he turned 80. The Beatles singer's birthday message comes as it's reported Sir Paul's headline Glastonbury set will include a virtual duet with the late John Lennon

Sir Paul McCartney turned 80 in style on Saturday, with a whole host of friends and famous faces taking to social media to wish him well on his landmark birthday.

The Beatles icon received messages from icons such as former bandmate Sir Ringo Starr, 81, former UK prime minister Gordon Brown and Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood online, ahead of becoming Glastonbury’s oldest ever solo headline act next week.

Referencing their 1968 hit song Birthday, Sir Ringo wrote on Twitter : "They say it’s your birthday Saturday happy birthday Paul love you man have a great day peace and love Ringo and Barbara love love peace and love."

The drummer, who himself turned 80 last year, also shared a photo where he’s flashing a V sign for peace.

Rolling Stones legend Ronnie Wood also used social media to wish his fellow singer well, sharing a series of photos of him and Sir Paul together throughout the years on Twitter.

"A very happy 80th birthday," the rocker captioned the trip down memory lane.

Sir Paul has been celebrating his milestone birthday while on tour in America, and earlier this week was joined on stage by Jon Bon Jovi in New Jersey, who sung Happy Birthday to him with the help of some the huge crowd watching on.

"Bon Jovi sings Happy Birthday to Paul McCartney with 50,000 New Jersey fans #PaulMcCartneyGotBack #bonjovi," Sir Paul's official Instagram captioned a snap of the moment on Friday.

Former UK prime minister Gordon Brown referenced the duet from the two stars as he wished the Let It Be singer well, tweeting: "I think we would all like to sing Happy 80th Birthday to @PaulMcCartney today. My friend Jon Bon Jovi doing it in style here."

Beach Boys star Brian Wilson, The Beatles official Twitter account and BBC broadcaster Edith Bowman also took to social media to wish the dad-of-five well on his special day.

Mick Hucknall of Simply Red added: "Britain’s greatest living songwriter Sir Paul McCartney is 80 today.

"He shares his birthday with my Daughter who is now 15 and admires the Beatles enormously. Today is a beautiful day."

Next Saturday, Sir Paul will become Glastonbury’s oldest ever solo headliner when he takes to the Pyramid stage at the Somerset music festival.

It's reported that Sir Paul is set to virtually reunite with his former bandmate and friend John Lennon - who was shot and killed in 1980 - during his highly-anticipated headline performance.

"He is tinkering around with the setlist but it looks like he will do a virtual duet with John Lennon," a source close to the star told the MailOnline earlier this week.

"There is some footage of Lennon singing I've Got a Feeling, from Let It Be, which Paul puts up on the big screen, and then he turns around and sings to him."
