Denise Johnson, a singer best known for her performance on Primal Scream's 1991 album Screamadelica, has died at the age of 53

Primal Scream singer Denise Johnson has died at the age of 53.

The sad news was confirmed by her friend on Twitter.

Her cause of death has not been confirmed, but a statement from her family said that she had "died suddenly" after an illness.

Denise was best known for her performance on the band's 1991 album Screamadelica.

The singer was part of the band from 1990 to 1995 and featured on two of their biggest hits, Higher Than The Sun and Don't Fight It, Feel It.

Denise also loaned her vocals to tracks with a string of other artists, including The Pet Shop Boys and Bernard Sumner.

Denise was planning to release her solo album later this year.

The album, entitled Where Does It Go, was scheduled to drop on September 25.

Following her death, a number of her fellow artists took to social media to pay tribute.

Joy Division's Stephen Morris said he was "shocked and devastated".

While a post by indie band Doves read: "We are all devastated to hear the news that our old friend and all round beautiful person Denise Johnson has passed away.

"What a loss for the many people who loved her."

Primal Scream member Simone Marie Butler tweeted: "Very sad news love and prayers to Denise’s family and loved ones. Rest in Power Denise Johnson x"

While The Chemical Brothers star Ed Simons labelled Denise "amazing".

Denise was born in Manchester and began her career with American soul band Maze in the late 1980s.

She released solo material in the 1990s, with singles Rays of the Shining Sun, I Believe and Inner Peace.

Denise landed her role in Primal Scream's Screamadelica album after being recommended by Tony Martin, of the duo Hypnotone, who was involved in making the album.

Speaking about performing with the band, she said in 2018: "Recording with Primal Scream was nothing like I’d experienced before.
