Piers Morgan has called for "shameless" Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to be stripped of their royal titles over their "outrageous" comments about the US election.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who stepped down as senior royals and quit Britain to start a new life in California, hit headlines this week when they released a message to US voters ahead of polling day in November.

However, Good Morning Britain host Piers, 55, has accused the pair of making the "Queen's life extremely difficult" by wading into politics.

The monarch is famously politically neutral along with the rest of the royal family, who do not vote in elections.

Piers is adamant that Harry and Meghan should renounce their royal titles if they want to express their views on the US election.

In his column for the Daily Mail, he writes: "The Royal Family... [know] that to publicly declare any kind of partisan views would make the Queen's life extremely difficult.

"But it appears Meghan and Harry didn't get the memo. Or rather, they got it - but they don't want to abide by it..."

He goes on to claim the couple didn't really quit the Royal Family but "just quit the boring bits" as they retained a slew of titles including those of the Earl and Countess of Dumbarton and Baron and Baroness Kilkeel.

Piers insists keeping hold of their honours should stop them from getting involved in politics.

He went on: "Keeping the royal titles prohibits them from sticking their noses into the political trough as they've now done.

"It's frankly outrageous for two members of the Royal Family to abuse their positions and embarrass their country in such a shameless way."

Piers concludes by stating the monarch has "no choice" but to strip the pair of their titles, adding: "Before they do even further damage."

Harry and Meghan's video did not specifically urge Americans to vote for one side or the other.

However, many have seen it as them coming out against Donald Trump and endorsing his rival Joe Biden as they urged voters to reject hate speech.

President Trump has since retaliated with a stinging comment about the couple, saying: "I'm not a fan of hers and I would say this, and she has probably heard this, I wish a lot of luck to Harry - because he's going to need it."
