Piers Morgan has lashed out Donald Trump critics who have been rejoicing in the president's positive coronavirus test.

Last night it was revealed that Trump and First Lady Melania have both contracted Covid-19 and are now in quarantine.

At the age of 74, the president is in the high-risk group of those most likely to develop serious complications from the virus.

After the announcement was made, critics of the president's handling of the pandemic have flooded social media with jokes and memes about the news.

The reaction stirred up a fury in Good Morning Britain host Piers, who took to his own account to call out the 'disgusting ecstatic glee' over Trump's diagnosis .

Hitting out at the haters, Piers fired off: "Interesting to see those who’ve spent the last few years screaming that Trump’s an uncaring, heartless empathy-devoid b*stard now spewing their gleeful joy that he & his wife have a deadly virus. They’re no better than the man they loathe."

He then said some of the vitriol reminded him of the reaction to Boris Johnson being hospitalised with coronavirus back in April.

"It’s the ecstatic glee I am witnessing that is so distasteful & hypocritical from those who preach about tolerance and kindness. We saw the same when Boris Johnson nearly died. It’s vile," slammed Piers.

One of his followers then responded: "You can’t deny that it’s ironic that a guy who said it was a hoax and that it would magically disappear has now contracted it. He has also been so lame in dealing with it that the US is in a terrible mess. This is his mess."

Piers replied: "Nobody’s been more critical of Trump over covid than me. But I don’t want him or his wife to die from it. Those who do are despicable."

He then retweeted a post from one user that read: "Just so we're clear here: I hope he dies" and branded it "disgusting".

Luckily for Piers, he was not on Good Morning Britain this morning when actor Dominic West revealed he 'jumped for joy' after hearing the President has coronavirus.

West shocked hosts Kate Garraway and Adil Ray as he said: "What goes around comes around."

Trump, who had been accused of "downplaying" the virus since March, confirmed he and wife Melania Trump had tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday night.

One of his top aides Hope Hicks previously tested positive for the virus, having travelled closely with him all this week ahead of the news.
