Phillip Schofield has revealed he never lied to his wife Stephanie Lowe about being gay.

The This Morning presenter, 58, has been married to Steph for 27 years and the pair share two daughters, with Phil coming out as gay in February in an emotional statement and interview.

Writing in his new book Life's What You Make It, Phil said he wouldn't have married her in 1993 if he'd have known he was a gay man as it took him years to figure out.

He explained that he told her about his sexuality when he finally worked out it for himself.

Phil said: "I didn't know I was gay when I married Steph. If I had, I wouldn't have got married."

He wrote that there was no "specific day or time" that he realised he was gay but that he had been "increasingly aware" for around the last five years.

In the book he hit out at those who accused him of "lying to Steph for 27 years".

Phil said: "When I eventually knew, so did she."

As he struggled with his sexuality his mental health suffered and he began to take medication.

Phil slept only two hours a night and believed he would have an emotional breakdown if he didn't come out.

On February 7 Phil released a statement to Instagram to come out to his fans.

He wrote: "With the strength and support of my wife and my daughters, I have been coming to terms with the fact that I am gay."

Just minutes later he spoke about his sexuality in an emotional interview with his This Morning co-host Holly Willoughby.

Phil and Stephanie are still married and they still live together in the family home with their two daughters Molly, 27, and 24-year-old Ruby.

The TV star said Steph has shown him "unconditional love" and supported him in coming out.

Phil has admitted it "almost made me sick" coming out to his girls.

But he revealed: "When things got really dark, (Steph) reminded me how much they all loved me and that there was nothing that the four of us couldn't cope with."
