Phillip Schofield recalls the incredible moment he came out as gay to his mum

Phillip Schofield drove to his family to his hometown in Cornwall to tell his mum he is gay, but they had a hilarious misunderstanding

Phillip Schofield has opened up on the incredible moment he came out as gay to his mum.

The TV presenter, 58, came out on Instagram back in February before opening up about his sexuality in an emotional interview with Holly Willoughby on This Morning just minutes later.

But before he came out publicly, he told his family and he's recalled making the journey to his hometown in Cornwall to tell his mum Pat.

Speaking on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Friday, Phil explained that he was having problems with his eyesight when he arrived and his mum was very concerned.

When he sat her down to have that important talk with her, she hilariously thought he was going to speak about his eyes.

"She knew I was coming and she knew something was up," Phil said.

"I have floaters in my eyes which drive me crazy.

"I don't talk about them very much... it's like a filthy bathroom window drifting in front of my vision...

"So we had our fish and chips and I said, 'Mum, I have something to tell you,' and she said, 'Okay, alright,' and I said, 'I'm gay.'

"And she went, 'Oh thank god, I thought you were going blind!'"

Phil has praised his family for being supportive about him coming out.

He said his wife of 27 years Stephanie Lowe told him he has her "unconditional love".
