Nicolas Cage’s bizarre marriage to Lisa Marie Presley as ‘tyrannical pirates’

Hollywood legend Nicolas Cage has had many loves but one of his most famous is short-lived marriage to Lisa Marie Presley.

Despite only being a couple for two years, Face/Off star Nicolas made his mark on country singer Lisa Marie's life and vice-versa.

The pair began seeing each other in 2000 just after Lisa Marie had divorced her second husband, complicated prince of pop Michael Jackson.

In fact, according to People, Lisa Marie fell for Nicolas after meeting Nicolas at the 52nd birthday party for Ramones guitarist Johnny Ramone’s, which she was attending with her then-fiance, Hawaiian musician John Oszajca.

The future couple struck up conversation and onlookers noted their connection.

The pair went public as a couple in May 2001 - a month after Lisa Marie revealed she had ended a 16-month engagement to Oszajca.

In August that year, Nicolas told Jay Leno: "She is a very honest person and I admire that quality."

The daughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, Lisa Marie already had two children by her first husband Danny Keough : daughter Riley Keough and son Benjamin Keough.

Cage also had a son named Weston from his relationship with actress Christina Fulton, while he had previously been married to actress Patricia Arquette.

Nicolas and Lisa Marie married in August 2002, however, Cage filed for divorce 107 days later.

They didn't finalise their divorce until 2004.

Before this was completed, Lisa Maria appeared on Larry King Live in 2003 and gave an insight into their relationship.

She said: "It looked attractive like I could be equal. Similar situations, similar backgrounds.

"So we connected, we had a great connection. We were both a bit - we're sort of these gypsy spirited, you know, tyrannical pirates."

However, it was this kind of attitude and mix of personalities that led to the marriage's downfall.

"And one pirate marries another they will sink the ship basically is what it comes down to," revealed Lisa Marie.

"It was kind of one of those things where you marry someone hoping - I mean we'd already had - we'd been together for two years before we got married, so - it was one of those things where you're marrying hoping that you're going to either stabilize it or it's going to, you know, accentuate all that was going on prior to what was problematic.

"So it kind of did the latter, that's all."

A major issue that arose, however, was Nicolas' adoration for Lisa Marie's iconic father - The King - Elvis Presley, which became a fascination itself in the media.

Cage had even based his outlandish performance in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart on Elvis.

Of the comparison to her father and its role in their relationship, Lisa Marie said: "I was sitting outside because he was in the tabloids there was all this Elvis fascination and Elvis obsession and I...I said I can't believe they are actually pulling it off with you now too.

"I'm dating you. And you've got, I don't know, over 50 movies... [An] Academy award, amazing actor, you're getting put off on some, as an Elvis freak because you did those, you know, whatever.

"He got annoyed, you know, and I got annoyed. I was like how can they, you know, they have to make it something.

"It's not, you know we cannot be because you're an Elvis freak, you know, thing. Which is said about both of us, actually."

The pair were said to have kept their relationship amicable when they legally ended their marriage in 2004.

After their marriage ended, Nicolas went on to marry on two more occasions.

Two months after the divorce to Lisa Marie was finalised, Nicolas married Alice Kim in July 2004. The pair were married until 2016 when they divorced. They had previously had a son named Kal-El, after Superman, in 2005.

Nicolas then married Erika Koike in March 2019 but sought an annulment a mere four days later, eventually divorcing her in June last year.

Meanwhile, Lisa Marie went on to marry music producer Michael Lockwood in 2006 and they had twin daughters Harper and Finley.

The pair bitterly split in 2016 after ten years of marriage and are currently locked in a custody battle over their daughters.

Tragically, earlier this year, Lisa Marie lost her eldest son Benjamin to suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot wound on July 12, 2020.
