Broadcaster Nicky Campbell’ s revelations about sexual abuse at school prompted hundreds to get in touch – but there was one phone call that stopped him in his tracks.

An old classmate asking him to confirm the identity of “Edgar”, the teacher Nicky had witnessed abusing another pupil when he was 10.

When Nicky replied yes, his friend burst into tears and said aside from his wife he had never told anyone about the pervert before.

Now, he said he is trying to get justice for victims by campaigning for the extradition of “Edgar”.

The paedophile is believed to be alive and living abroad with his wife.

Nicky says: “The accountability is for those who have suffered for all their lives. He didn’t directly abuse me but I saw him abuse.”

He hopes the number of people coming forward will encourage the Government to speed up the extradition process.

Nicky said: “All we ask is this man comes over here and gets a fair trial.”

Last Wednesday, the presenter revealed he had witnessed and experienced sexual and violent abuse at the independent school.

On Thursday, the host and his BBC 5 Live Breakfast team then received hundreds of calls and messages.

Many of those who got in touch suffered similar torment from teachers, relatives and carers, and shared their stories for the first time.

Nicky says he has had a lot of emails from people about “Edgar”.

The Edinburgh Academy said it deeply regrets the alleged incidents and “wholeheartedly” apologised.
