Neil Druckmann Teases The Last Of Us Part 2 Multiplayer, Says It’ll Be Worth It

Many were hoping that this weekend’s Last of Us celebration would feature an announcement regarding Part 2’s multiplayer, but unfortunately, the day came and went, and we still haven’t seen anything from TLOU2’s multiplayer expansion.

On Saturday night, Naughty Dog‘s vice president Neil Druckmann teased The Last of Us Part 2’s multiplayer by telling fans to stay patient, and that the wait will be worth it.

Last September, Naughty Dog confirmed that The Last of Us Part 2 wouldn’t have a multiplayer mode at launch, as they said the following regarding their plan for an online-based expansion.

“As development began on the evolution of our Factions mode from The Last of Us, the vision of the team grew beyond an additional mode that could be included with our enormous single player campaign. Wanting to support both visions, we made the difficult choice that The Last of Us: Part II would not include an online mode. However, you will eventually experience the fruits of our team’s online ambition, but not as part of The Last of Us: Part II. When and where it will be realised is still to be determined.”

Also back in September, Bruce Straley, who worked with Naughty Dog on the first game, said that the Sony-owned developer has some pretty ambitious plans for The Last of Us Part 2’s multiplayer, adding that players are going to be stoked once they finally get their hands on it.

“I know the team very well & trust them thoroughly! I also know what they’re working on and I can attest that SP and MP are both EXTREMELY ambitious,” said Straley. “I can only joke because I’m friends with these people and I have absolute faith in what they’re doing.

“I guarantee you‘re gonna be stoked to get your hands on both modes,” Straley continued. “But you gotta let them do their thing. Have faith. You’re in good hands! Your time will come!”

There’s still no timetable for when The Last of Us Part 2’s multiplayer will be added, nor do we know if it’ll be added to the core game or be a standalone application. Also, given that we still haven’t seen anything official from the mode, it seems likely that it’ll also come to the PlayStation 5 in addition to being launched on the PlayStation 4.

It’s probably pretty safe to assume that we’ll see something from The Last of Us Part 2’s multiplayer before the end of the year.
