Dougie Poynter has spoken out on how his addiction to Valium led to him "losing two years."

The bass player, 32, recently told that he took "lethal doses" of Valium after McFly decided to take an indefinite hiatus in 2016.

He revealed that he struggled after he and his bandmates - Tom Fletcher, Harry Judd and Danny Jones - went their separate ways and he says he turned to the drug to help his worries about the band breaking up "disappear."

Speaking openly about his battle with the drug and when quizzed by The Sun on if he struggles to remember the time he was taking Valium, he said: "Honestly, yeah. I mean, you get flashbacks, but it’s a huge blur. It’s strange.

“That’s something which is really hard to come to terms with, literally losing two years. Two years just went as like a weird dream. Coming out the other end was like, ‘What? Where’s my band?’”

During the chat, it was also revealed that his bandmate Harry encouraged him to go to rehab after learning that the chilling drug could cause him to die.

Dougie added of Harry stepping in: “It was certainly an intervention. I don’t remember kicking up a fuss but . . . I don’t remember much really.”

McFly is set to discuss Dougie's Valium battle in an upcoming episode of their ITV show McFly: All About Us.

In scenes set to air on Saturday Dougie explains that Valium was a way of him making his stresses disappear.

In 2011 Dougie told how he was driven to the brink of despair by his inner demons and tried to kill himself after struggling with drink and drugs.

He tried to commit suicide in a car in February 2011 and was then treated for depression in rehab.

He made a good recovery and went on to win the 11th series of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!
