Matthew Perry's stepfather Keith Morrison has opened up about the special bond he shares with the Friends star.

The award-winning Canadian journalist, 73, said his proudest accomplishment is being a father of six as he gushed over his tight-knit family.

The Dateline correspondent became a stepdad back in 1981 when he married Matthew's mum Suzanne Perry.

Since tying the knot, the pair have gone from strength to strength and have been married for over 39 years (and counting).

Proud stepdad Keith says Matthew has been nothing short of "remarkable" since his childhood.

He told People: "He's one of those people who always is the centre of the room for a reason and it was so as a kid."

He went on: "On the hockey team, I used to take him off to his hockey games on Saturday mornings. It was like Matthew and the hockey team. He was the one who scored all the goals. He was the guy.

"The same on the tennis court. He was extremely, extremely good on the tennis court and very intense. He's an intense, talented, focused character.

"He's very bright. That was always the case as he was growing up."

But when Matthew landed the role of a lifetime as Chandler Bing on hit US sitcom Friends, Keith admitted that the news "surprised him as much as it surprised us."

He recalled: "He was at a stage where [he was questioning] if this acting thing was going to work or not.

"Then suddenly, boy did it ever. A million things have sprung from that, but him being selected for a role like that does not surprise me one bit."

He added: "It matched his particular sense of humor precisely, whether they wrote that for him knowing what he was like or whether he adapted it more for himself, probably a combination of the two.

"But that character is Matthew. Yeah, and it always has been him. He's just a talented soul, a smart guy. He's a good guy. We love having him around."

After marrying Suzanne, 72, Keith became stepdad to Matthew, 51, Caitlin, 39, Emily, 35, Will, 34, and Madeline, 31.

What's more, Keith's son Michael, 46, from a previous marriage also shares a close bond with Suzanne's children, making this blended family the stuff of dreams.

Keith and Suzanne also share four grandchildren.

And it seems as though it's been the biggest blessing for all parties, as Keith admits that everyone gets along and share close bonds with one another.

He said: "There's no describing what a wonder it is.

"When we're all together, it's just a brew that you could not mix no matter how hard you tried if you did it by hand."
