Chaka Zulu is said to have fired back in self-defence during a shooting in Atlanta which left him in a critical condition and another man dead.

The manager of Ludacris was shot in the incident on Sunday night and footage showed the shoot-out outside a restaurant.

Sources say the music veteran was with his daughter when he was approached by another man.

TMZ reports how the two men exchanged words before the intensity of the conversation escalated and left Chaka Zulu scared for his life.

The publication reports that a female then pushed the other man away from Chaka, but he didn't back down.

As the pair got more heated, it's said that another group of three or four men got involved and knocked Chaka to the ground.

Then, it's alleged that one of the men produced a gun and fired at least two shots, with sources explaining to the publication how Chaka got back to his feet and fired at least one shot in return.

The source tells TMZ that the music manager was shot at least once with the bullet coming close to his heart.

It's unclear what initially caused the altercation, with rumours suggesting it could have been due to the man being refused entrance to a party.

The incident saw a 23-year-old man killed, with it currently not clear who shot him. His identity wasn't disclosed by the Atlanta Police Department.

"Multiple persons [were] shot at" during the altercation, according to an incident report filed by the Atlanta Police Department on Monday.
