Katy Perry has returned to work on American Idol as production for the fourth season of the talent show gets underway.

The 35-year-old Roar songstress, who gave birth to her first child at the end of August, is on the judging panel alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.

Auditions are now taking place for the popular talent show, with Katy and her co-stars looking for the country's next top talent.

Her return to American Idol comes just over a month and a half after the songstress welcomed her first child, Daisy, with actor Orlando Bloom.

According to People magazine, the show - that returns to TV screens next year - is set to face several changes in order to keep the cast and crew safe from coronavirus.

Everyone one set will be tested regularly for Covid-19 and judges will hold auditions in just three locations in California instead of more extensive travel.

While this is Katy's first few days back on the American Idol set, the new mum had also been working on her music shortly after giving birth.

At the end of August, Katy appeared from her hospital bed to announce the launch of her new album, Smile.

In September, Katy also opened up about returning to work while also juggling new mum duties.

In a series of tweets, the Smile songstress spoke of her experience of motherhood and how it was a 'full time job'.

"Popular misconception: being a mom isn’t a full-time job," Katy penned.

"Part 2: when a mom finally goes back to work (whatever profession they do) it’s not like they been coming from months of ‘time off …’ she’s coming from a full time job … of being a mom, lol.”

She then added: "Part 3: call your mom and tell her you love and appreciate her and advocate for paid family leave!”

In a final tweet she added that she 'loved her job' as a mum.
