Kate Garraway squints through radio show with mystery eye injury

The presenter has returned to work on Smooth FM after being taken an extended break when her husband Derek Draper was hospitalised with coronavirus

Kate Garraway admitted to her Instagram followers that she was struggling just a week into her return to Smooth FM.

The presenter, 53, revealed she was suffering from a mystery eye injury that left her having difficulty seeing even with glasses on.

Kate returned to her radio duties only last week after being granted an extended break when husband Derek Draper was hospitalised with the coronavirus.

Despite fighting Covid-19, Derek continues his health battle in hospital while Kate has tried to find a 'new normal' for herself and their two childen in his absence.

Despite her efforts, Kate was dealt a blow this morning when she was forced to put on a brave face and head to work with impaired vision.

Taking to Instagram to post a video of herself where huge specs on in the studio, Kate asked her followers: "Morning! Am I looking clever?"

"I always think that when I've got my glasses on I look a bit more brainy," she went on. "But if you're listening to me on Smooth Radio you'll know that nothing has actually changed.

"I've got a really sore eye" Kate explained. "It's really hurting and I don't know what I've done to it. I can't put my contacts in and I'm wearing my glasses.

"The songs however, are as perfect as they always are here on Smooth Radio so do join me!" she urged.

Kate then joked: "And for an extra game you can see if I get the names right of the bands on the playlist because I can't read very well either.

"But it's relaxing listening and that's what counts!" she added.

Fans were quick to send the former I'm A Celeb star their support in the comments.

"You're an inspiration!" one gushed.

"Looking as beautiful as ever Kate," another told her.

It's been a turbulent year for Kate whose husband Derek has been fighting for his life in hospital since March.

As she supported her family over the last six months, Kate was granted leave from her radio show and presenting duties on Good Morning Britain.

Kate made an emotional return to the ITV studios in August where she updated viewers on Derek's condition.

She said she still has not yet been able to see Derek in person and doctors are trialing new methods to bring him back to health.

Kate said the virus had 'attacked everything' leaving Derek with clots in his lungs, holes in his heart and made him diabetic.
