Kate Garraway takes GMB break on July 21st to be with Derek Draper

Kate Garraway has confirmed she will return to Good Morning Britain on Monday after stepping back from the show due to her husband’s ill health.

The 55-year-old presenter admitted he took an "unexpected and frightening turn for the worse" that left her with no choice but to put her work on hold.

Derek has been suffering from serious after-effects of coronavirus since he contracted the illness back in 2020.

Kate says her husband Derek Draper is now finally "back on the right side of it" and so she is returning to work on GMB and Smooth Radio after three weeks off.

Taking to social media to share the exciting news with her followers, she said she is “so looking forward” to returning to the programme.

She penned: “Thank you so so much for all your messages of support - they really do mean the world.

“I’ve been off @gmb and @smoothradio as Derek’s health took an unexpected and frightening turn for the worse that landed him back in intensive care and fighting for his life - again.”

She tweeted: “Thanks to the extraordinary @ nhs teams and his own amazing life force and spirit Derek, please god, is back on the right side of it now.

“I'm so looking forward to seeing you all back on @gmb from 6am tomorrow and @smoothradio - hopefully celebrating a @lionesses #worldcup win!”

Kate's followers sent her messages of support after reading her latest update, as one commented: “Brilliant news, we are so fortunate to have the NHS. You're such an inspiration, Kate, we've missed you in the mornings, look after yourself too.”

Another fan added: “So pleased to hear Derek is on the mend, it’s fantastic news. It will be good to see you back at GMB, you’ve been missed.”

Another commented: “Wishing you, Derek and the children well, not forgetting Derek's parents. Please look after yourselves. Don’t rush back too soon. You need your health and strength, love and prayers to you all.”

Former political advisor Derek is the worst affected living Covid patient in the UK after spending 13 months in hospital. He first contracted the virus at the beginning of 2020.

The dad-of-two returned home but has been unable to fully communicate and has issues with mobility and has struggled with major health problems.

One source close to the family recently told The Mirror he was “seriously unwell” and that Kate was putting all her energy into caring for him which meant she couldn’t host GMB as normal.

They added: “Derek is back in hospital in a very serious condition but the family knows he is in the best hands. Kate is doing everything she can for her husband. He comes first and so work will have to take a back seat this week.”

Since Derek became ill, Kate has intrepidly balanced her work and family commitments - including looking after their two children Darcey, 16, and Billy, 12.

She has also become a full-time carer to Derek but said recently that she's tried to remain positive.
