Julie Andrews reunites with the Sound of Music co-stars as she’s honoured for career

Julie Andrews reunited with some of her co-stars from the Sound of Music (1965) yesterday when she became the recipient of the Life Achievement Award by the American Film Institute

The halls were alive with the Sound of Music cast chatting at a recent gala tribute to actress Julie Andrews, with them having reunited 57 years after the musical film's release.

Julie, 86, met five of the seven actors who played the von Trapp children in the 1965 film as she received the American Film Institute's highest honour, the Life Achievement Award.

She got together with Debbie Turner, 65, who left acting after playing Marta on screen, and Duane Chase, 71, who had a career in forestry and geology after playing Kurt.

They were joined by Angela Cartwright, 69, who the on-screen daughter of the late Paul Newman in Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956) before she played Brigitta von Trapp.

Nicholas Hammond, 72, who played Friedrich and went on to star as Spider-Man in a 1970's TV show and Kym Karath, 63, who played Gretl, the youngest von Trapp, joined them.

The reunion sadly didn't include Charmian Carr, who played Leisl, as she died in 2016 aged 73, nor did it feature Heather Menzies, who played Louisa, as she died in 2017 aged 68.

The gala in Los Angeles yesterday (June 9) saw the American Film Institute pay tribute to Julie - who won an Oscar in 1965 for her role as the titular character in Mary Poppins (1964).

The president of the American Film Institute, Bob Gazzale, paid tribute to Julie at the recent gala, with him saying that she had "sent spirits soaring across generations".

The Sound of Music - produced and directed by the late Robert Wise - was released in 1965. It's an adaption of the stage musical of the same name, based on a true story.

In the film, Julie's character, nun Maria, is sent to be governess to the children of retired naval officer Captain Georg von Trapp, played by the late Christopher Plummer.

Following his death last year, aged 91, his former co-star Julie paid tribute, with her saying: "The world has lost a consummate actor today and I have lost a cherished friend."
