Marvel star Clark Gregg has officially filed for divorce from his wife, Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey, according to legal documents.

The actors had been married for 19 years.

The filing comes months after they announced their split in a joint statement on July 3, leaving fans devastated.

The Blast reports that the documents were filed by the Agents of SHIELD star in Los Angeles County Courts on August 13.

It's not known at this stage whether or not the former couple had a prenuptial agreement, but as their daughter Stella Gregg, who starred alongside her dad in Agents of SHIELD, is now 18, child support is not an issue in the case.

Jennifer and Clark announced their separation on Instagram by sharing a loved-up picture of themselves cuddling up.

They each wrote on their accounts: "after 19 years together, we separated in january, knowing we’d always be a family who loves, values and cares for each other. we recently made the difficult decision to divorce, but we remain close and are deeply grateful for the life we’ve shared and the wonderful daughter we’ve raised. - jennifer & clark

"p.s. totally crying as we post this"

Their fans were gutted by the announcement.

One wrote: "This hurts my heart; I always thought you were perfect for each other - y’all were so good together in @lifetimemovies The Road to Christmas - a must watch every year! Sending positive energy and prayers that you both are happy and healthy and always moving forward"

Another penned: "I am heartbroken for you both to hear this Jennifer, Clarke but i hope your friendship continues to grow."

"So sad and so sorry to hear," a third posted.

The filing comes not long after it was announced that Jennifer would be returning to her iconic role of Baby in a sequel to her hit movie Dirty Dancing, in which she starred alongside the late Patrick Swayze.

The much-rumoured movie has been confirmed by Lionsgate CEO john Feltheimer.

Jennifer will also act as executive producer on the movie.

Feltheimer told Deadline that the flick will be just like the beloved 1987 original, which made almost $220 million (£167.4 million) at the box office.
