Taking to social media on Saturday, the 53-year-old action star broke the sad news to fans and followers.

Hugh wrote: “t’s a very sad day for our family. Dali, our beloved Frenchie, passed away last night.

“He would’ve been 12 next month … which I’m told is a long life for this breed.

“I always, always called him the ROCKSTAR. Because he was! He marched to the beat of his own drum, was beloved by the whole world, and boy did he have a good life.”

Hugh continued: “We will miss him but know he’s howling in heaven, ruling the roost and enjoying the all you can eat buffet.”

He added: “RIP Dali Rockstar Jackman. We love you!”

Fans and followers on Instagram were quick to show their support to Hugh, with many leaving messages of condolence in the comment section of his post.

One wrote: “I’m so sorry you’ve lost such a beloved member of the Jackman family. I’m sure he is already being missed by all of you. It’s never easy as they’re not just pets.”

And another typed: “I am so sorry for your loss …. My heart goes out to you and Deb!! It’s never easy to loose a fur-baby!!”

Hugh has been married to 66-year-old actress Deborra-Lee Furness since 1996 and together they have two children.

Last year, Hugh opened up about parenting, telling Australia's Today: "I've been thinking a lot about when the kids were young and that 3.00am when you're so tired and you're thinking, 'Please go back to sleep', I'd give everything to go back.

"To that wake up, pick them up at 3.00 in the morning and give them a cuddle. Now, I have a 16-year-old and a 20-year- old who are like, 'Back it up, back it up, enough of the hugs.'"

While more recently, he opened up about his own childhood, explaining to Self magazine that he uses journaling to help balance his mental health.

He siad: “A lot of what I grew up with in Australia, a very patriarchal society, is being entirely challenged and broken down daily; this whole idea, when I was growing up, that somehow girls became women but you had to make boys into men—had to push them, challenge them.

“I was actually quite a scared kid. I remember being scared a lot, but you weren’t allowed to be scared.”

He added: “Men are being encouraged to be empathetic, to understand your feelings, to have a vocabulary around feeling,”
