Hollywood stars tell sex scenes secrets from sponges to whoopee cushions

From sponges to whoopee cushions, actors and actresses haven't been shy about what gave them the confidence to film the steamy scenes

Hollywood have mastered some of the sauciest sex scenes on TV and in the cinema.

But the acting stars have let slip the unusual methods they used to pull off the show-stopping sex scenes made public to the rest of the world.

From sponges to whoopee cushions, actors and actresses haven't been shy about what gave them the confidence to film the steamy scenes.

Anyone who was going to watch Fifty Shades of Grey knew it was packed with BDSM sex scenes.

Leading actor Jamie Dornan opened up about having a cover to make sure he didn't accidentally show off his dignity.

He told GQ : "Your dignity is intact as much as it's all tucked away in a little flesh-coloured bag…

"As a guy you put all your essentials in a little bag and you tie it up like a little bag of grapes and it's tucked away. It's quite a peculiar thing to do every day."

Meanwhile, Michael Fassbender had tried out a number of different methods over the years.

Filming spanking scenes with Keira Knightley in A Dangerous Method, the acting pair knocked back the booze.

She told The Mirror: “We were both very nervous about those scenes because they’re not nice.

"Fassbender is absolutely wonderful – we had a couple of shots of vodka before doing the scene and a couple of glasses of champagne afterwards.

"A lot of people say acting is like therapy, but I don’t go for that. It is for some people, but not me."

But Michael reckoned his best method was telling jokes to make the atmosphere as "relaxed as possible".

He told Vulture : "The most important thing is to say, 'Let’s talk about this'.

"You tell jokes on set and try to make things as relaxed as possible, because to be honest, you want to get in there and go for it immediately. Then it’s going to be over quicker!"

Most recently, Normal People bosses employed an intimacy co-ordinator to help instruct Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal during their raunchy scenes between the sheets.

Daisy said: “It was about creating a real friendship with Paul so we could trust each other."

Oscar-winning Olivia Colman come up with an usual barrier between her legs during her intimate scenes in The Favourite.

Actresses Olivia and Emma Stone could simulate the sex acts without fear of "finding something you shouldn't find".

The Favourite star picked out a big wet sponge from the make-up department to form the barrier.

She told The Graham Norton Show: "In order to avoid finding anything you shouldn’t have found… because it’s sort of under the sheets like that… I asked the make-up department if they had a sponge.

"I put a sponge there and I said 'it’s alright, there’s a barrier, you’ll be fine.' It was a big wet sponge."

Kate Winslet had a different trick up her sleeve as she bounced on an exercise ball while she pretended to get hot and heavy in 2005 film Romance and Cigarettes.

Director John Turturro lifted the lid on how the actress nailed the steamy scenes by bopping up and down on a exercise ball as they filmed extremely close up scenes.

He told director Robert LuPone: "Kate had sprained her ankle, so we said, 'If you sit on James, you're going to be inhibited because you're going to be hurting him'.

"So let's put Kate on a little ball, a little exercise ball. I didn't want to shoot and for you to get embarrassed, I wanted Kate to do it all.

"So I had two prop guys to hold her and I realised they may start laughing, so I said, 'put something in your mouth because I don't want you laughing'."

Harlot's Jessica Brown Findlay used a whoopee cushion to dissolve the major awkward scenes.

She told the Radio Times : "I found it was quite amusing if you put a whoopee cushion underneath someone. It breaks the ice.

“Sex scenes are massively awkward. But you can make them funny.”
