Eleven years ago today the showbiz world was rocked by the sudden death of Boyzone's Stephen Gately.
In apparent good health and aged just 33, no-one could have predicted the beloved star's tragic passing after a night out in Majorca on October 10, 2009.
He's just finished a successful tour with bandmates Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch and Mikey Graham and was looking forward to a month-long break at the £1million villa he shared with husband Andrew Cowles in the affluent area of Puerto Andratx.
But instead, the singer went to sleep and never woke up after an undiagnosed heart condition called atheromatosis - a thickening of the arteries - caused his lungs to suddenly fill with fluid.
The night before had been like any other Saturday. Stephen and Andrew had enjoyed dinner at their favourite restaurant, followed by drinks at a bar, where they met Bulgarian model and student, Georgi Dochev.
The trio partied at the Black Cat nightclub in Palma before heading back to their apartment at around 5.30am.
Soon after, Stephen fell asleep on the sofa with Andrew's arm wrapped around him. It was there that the tragic star passed away.
Not realising, Andrew cuddled Stephen for three hours before going to sleep in their own bed.
It was only when Georgi stopped to have a cigarette on his way out at around 1.30pm that he noticed Stephen still hadn't moved and his hands were white.
"I went to take his pulse and couldn’t find one. I knew he was dead," he told The Sun in 2014, admitting he didn't know how to break the news to Andrew.
“I went into the bedroom and said, ‘I’m going. Let’s wake Stephen up so I can say goodbye’. Andy replied, ‘No, leave him sleeping’ and that’s when I told him Stephen looked strange," he said.
Reliving the heartbreaking scenes as Andrew frantically tried to revive his husband, Georgi continued, “Andy was whispering, ‘Come on baby, wake up’. He began slapping him round the face when he didn’t respond.
“When he too realised he was dead, he broke down in tears. He then tried to revive him by giving him mouth-to-mouth but there was nothing either of us could do.”
Stephen was pronounced dead at 2.25pm and an autopsy ruled he'd died from natural causes up to eight hours before.
“We know from the pathologist’s report that Stephen died sleeping with me on the sofa,” devastated Andrew told The Mirror.
“I know that my boy fell asleep under my arm, his heart stopped, he didn’t feel any pain.”
But in the harrowing first hours after the grim discovery, Andrew is said to have been wracked with guilt for not checking on him.
“I will never forgive myself for this. He died and I couldn’t help him. I feel like my life is over,” he is said to have told Stephen's Boyzone bandmates.
“They kept telling Andy that he shouldn’t blame himself – but he just kept crying his eyes out.
