According to Gwyneth Paltrow, there is a specific reason she and Chris Martin split up. They just didn’t fit right. In a new essay for Vogue UK published on Thursday, Paltrow explained why she and Martin didn’t get along, despite the fact they had been married for 11 years.
“We just didn’t quite fit together,” Paltrow explained, adding that there existed a sense of “unease and unrest.” Even though it wasn’t necessarily a match made in heaven, Paltrow says she and the Coldplay singer love their children to death.
As fans of the Hollywood actress know, she and Chris have two kids, including a 16-year-old daughter named Apple and a 14-year-old son named Moses. In the same essay for Vogue, Paltrow also reminisced on the day she and Chris realized it was time for them to split.
Despite “trying everything,” Gwyneth and Chris knew it was time for them to break up during a Tuscan countryside trip with Martin in celebration of her 38th birthday. Gwyneth says they didn’t want to split up; they didn’t want to give up so easily.

Over time, Gwyneth explained, she began to ponder how she and Chris could still support each other but not as lovers anymore.
Paltrow famously used the phrase, “conscious uncoupling,” which was inspired by her therapist. Gwyneth said she was fascinated by the statement, not for the words exactly, but for the sentiment.
According to the Contagion alum, the idea behind it was that she and Chris could still remain as part of a family, but they would no longer be a couple in the same way. These days, they get along great, and, as it was noted above, they love their kids more than anything.
These days, Gwyneth has moved onto a new relationship with Brad Falchuk and sources say the couple is “perfect for each other in every way.”
