Former Third Eye Blind bassist Jason Slater has died following liver failure at the age of 49.
The rock musician died on Wednesday according to daughter Alyssa Carlson who announced the news to TMZ.
Alyssa told the publication that Jason died in a hospital in Maui after keeping his health condition a secret, with she herself learning only last month when he was admitted to hospital.
A representative for Third Eye Blind told the publication that "when a spirited member of the music scene is taken too soon it is always a sad time."
Having grown up in Palo Alto in California, Jason was part of the original line-up of the band in their early days alongside the likes of Kevin Cadogan and Stephan Jenkins.
He departed the band before they found major commercial success, but went on to become a songwriter and record producer for bands such as Snake River Conspiracy and Microdot, Revenge of the Triads, and Queensrÿche.
A former colleague of Jason's, former Forbidden guitarist Craig Locicero wrote has written on Facebook: "The world lost a force of human nature today. Jason Slater has left the building.
Craig continued: "I’m heartbroken. This hits me right in the gut. From the first day I met Jason at the Music Annex when Forbidden was recording Distortion in 1994, we hit it off. Madden and music was our bond.
"As time went on, Jason did some pretty amazing things in his allotted slot of life. Jason was a successful producer, engineer, record label mogul, songwriter, musician, manager and partying animal all the while."
RIP, Jason Slater (1971-2020)
