John Saxon dead: Enter the Dragon star passes away from pneumonia at 83

Saxon's career dated back to the 1950s and also included roles in the first Nightmare on Elm Street film but he's most recognised for his role opposite Hollywood legend Bruce Lee

Enter the Dragon star John Saxon has passed away from pneumonia, aged 83.

The US actor and martial artist had a career that spanned 60 years and also included appearances in the first Nightmare on Elm Street film in 1984.

But he was arguably best known for his role as Roper in the 1973 Bruce Lee classic Enter the Dragon, that brought martial arts movies into the mainstream.

His third wife Gloria told the Hollywood Reporter her husband passed away on Saturday in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

An Italian American, he was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1935 and began acting as a teenager in the 1950s.

He made his acting debut in the 1954 Judy Holliday film It Should Happen to You where he had an uncredited role as a boy watching an argument in the park.

While his first credited role was in an episode of TV show Medic where he played a character named Danny Ortega in 1955.
