Emily Maitlis was left red-faced during last night's segment of BBC Newsnight.

The journalist was presenting Tuesday's show when she was forced to backtrack after making an awkward blunder live on air.

Emily, 50, was interviewing former health secretary Alan Johnson when she stumbled upon her words.

She left viewers giggling at their screens after introducing Alan from "hell" instead of Hull in the hilarious gaffe.

"The former health secretary Alan Johnson joins us down the line from hell," she announced before realising what she had said.

Emily, who had to quickly backtrack her words, continued, "From Hull," adding: "I'm never gonna recover from that now, am I?"

Meanwhile, viewers at home were in hysterics at Emily's funny mishap.

She was praised for the way she handled her blunder during the awkward showdown.

Taking to Twitter, fans shared their thoughts on the light-hearted moment.

One wrote: "An evening chuckle does us all some good!! I assume your brain was reading ahead to ‘former health Secretary’!"

"Emily. Most of us would have given a defensive or apologetic response. Yours was self deprecating and numerous. Brilliant. This is why you do your job. Do not be compromised. You have so many supporters," a second praised.

As a third commented: "That did make me laugh out loud when I heard it."

Emily retweeted the tweet herself after it circulated on social media, writing: "For clarity I do know hull is not hell. It's rather lovely."

She refused to let the blunder get her down, and continued with her impressive interview for fans watching at home.
