Elvis Costello blasted the Royal Platinum Jubilee concert as “sh**e” and ranted about Rod Stewart ’s performance of Sweet Caroline.

The music legend also claimed Diana Ross should have sung her Supremes hits You Keep Me Hanging On and Living In Shame because those songs were more appropriate to the royals.

Costello, whose hits include Everyday I Write The Book, mocked the Queen’s show as he performed in Scotland with his band The Imposters.

The London-born singer, 67, told the audience in Glasgow: “I was in Brighton the other night when the Jubilee was happening.”

After being met with a chorus of boos, he added: “But the show was good, wasn’t it? Wasn’t it? No, it was s***e.”

He was then greeted with laughter when he ridiculed Rod’s dodgy version of Sweet Caroline.

Costello added: “I mean, I know you all love him and he’s one of yours and everything, but Rod. What the f***?

“I must say, listen we all have bad nights vocally, but for f*** sake, Sweet f***ing Caroline.

“Are you f***ing kidding me?

“I mean I’ve been in showbusiness 45 years so I do know a thing or two. How is it that nobody suggested Rod sing You Wear It Well?”

Costello, who received a standing ovation during his gig at the Royal Concert Hall on Tuesday, took aim at Diana Ross.

He said: “Listen, Diana Ross had a whole playlist of songs that would have fitted the occasion: You Keep Me Hanging On, I’m Living In Shame. I’m not saying Love Child.

“You never heard it from me.” Fans who watched the 78-year-old Queen of Motown’s Jubilee performance had complained that she appeared to be miming her hit Chain Reaction but the BBC said she sang throughout.

Viewers also slammed 77-year-old Rod’s performance – but his wife Penny later explained that he had been recovering from Covid and had been asked to sing Sweet Caroline by the Beeb because it was one of the Queen’s favourites.
