Dustin Johnson unlikely to play again until ’21

Masters champion Dustin Johnson has decided to extend his break by withdrawing from next week’s Mayakoba Golf Classic. “I have heard nothing but great things about the tournament, golf course and the Mayakoba resort, so I was excited to play,” Johnson said in a statement distributed by the event. “However, my mind and body are telling me it’s time for a break, so I look forward to spending some much-needed time at home with Paulina and the boys.

“I know this is disappointing news and I sincerely apologize to all my friends involved with the tournament.”

Johnson has not played since his victory at Augusta National two weeks ago and the Mayakoba Golf Classic is the final event on the 2020 PGA Tour calendar. His next event is likely to be the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January.

With Johnson’s withdrawal, the top-ranked player in next week’s field is No. 3 Justin Thomas. Other notables include Brooks Koepka and Rickie Fowler.
