Dominic West suggested that women should be more understanding of their husband's affairs during an interview four years ago.
The 50-year-old actor, who starred in the hit drama The Affair, appeared to suggest that women could 'turn a blind eye' to their husbands' unruly behaviour and that it would be 'daft' to split up after a mere fling.
The married Wire actor himself was recently spotted kissing actress Lily James, while his wife was elsewhere.
Speaking to the Evening Standard in 2016, Dominic spoke frankly about the topic of infidelity and suggested that women shouldn't make such a fuss.
“I mean, I think women should be more indulgent of affairs,” he said during the interview at his home.
“I really do. It’s daft to kick someone out over a fling. Isn’t it?
He added: "Everyone should turn a blind eye to men’s behaviour between the ages of 40 and 50. Let it all blow over.”
It was unclear to the interviewer whether he was joking or not when he made the explosive statement.
Dominic's marriage was recently flung into the spotlight after pictures emerged of him kissing Lily James and affectionately stroking her hair on what appeared to look like a romantic getaway to Italy.
The pair were spotted having an intimate lunch during which Dominic kisses the Mamma Mia star's neck in a tender moment.
Dominic and Lily then appeared in high spirits as they shared an electric scooter while riding through the streets of Rome.
The seemingly romantic scenes came just one week after Lily's relationship with actor Matt Smith came to an end after five years of on and off dating.
Dominic has been married to landscape designer Catherine FitzGerald since 2010.
The couple also share four children - Dora, 13, Senan, 12, Francis, 11, and Christabel, seven.
Since the pictures of him kissing Lily emerged, the actor and his wife have put on a united front and squashed any rumours that their marriage is on the rocks.
The couple stepped out of their Wiltshire home and carried a sign that read: "Our marriage is strong and we're very much still together. Thank you."
They then shared a kiss in front of the cameras.
Despite the united display, an insider close to Catherine recently told the MailOnline that the mum of four was 'shocked and devastated' after seeing the pictures.
