CD Projekt Red‘s next game, Cyberpunk 2077, is currently scheduled to be released later this year, barring any more delays, and the Polish-based game developers feel like they’re competing with themselves after their latest release — The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — set a new standard for open-world gaming.
One way CD Projekt Red is trying to set a new standard for open-world gaming is by giving players the ability to complete the game without doing any of the main quests. Instead, there will be subplots in the game that’ll push the story along outside of the main quests, thus making it possible to complete Cyberpunk 2077 without doing any of the overarching main story missions.
“Subplots allow us to do something that we have never done before – they change the main plot of the game and they are doing that in such a way that you may not even finish the main plot, but still finish the game and get a completely different epilogue than the player with a different Life Path who made different choices, met different characters and formed relationships with them.”
Of course, games in the Far Cry series have given players the ability to complete the game without doing any quests, but those endings are usually triggered within their respective game’s first ten or fifteen minutes and are only triggered if the player decides to just do nothing instead of doing what the game is asking them to do.
As of right now, it’s unclear just how quickly players will be able to finish Cyberpunk 2077 without touching any of the main quests, and it also remains to be seen whether or not CD Projekt Red can successfully pull this off.
One thing that players won’t have the ability to do in Cyberpunk 2077 is dual-wield weapons, as CD Projekt Red’s global community lead Marcin Momot confirmed as much when asked about dual-wielding on Twitter.

It’s not the biggest deal in the world, but still, it’s a bit strange.
As of right now, it looks like Cyberpunk 2077 will be able to meet its latest release date after being delayed several times. So, barring any unforeseen circumstances, CD Projekt Red should have their next game out for consoles — PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X — and PC by its scheduled release date of November 19.
