After getting major backlash for the way she posed for her latest promotional photoshoot, Cardi B made sure to apologize. The controversy was over her supposedly paying homage to the Hindu Goddess, Durga through the shoot’s concept that seemed to be very reminiscent of how the Goddess is depicted.
And since the pictures were taken for her Footwear News cover story, the publication has also announced, earlier today, that they have retracted the first cover and that, at this point in time, they are working on a new cover.

As for the female emcee, she took to her go-to platform to apologize to everyone that was offended by the cultural appropriation featured in the initial cover.
Durga, the Hindu goddess, represents protection and strength and it seems like Cardi and the publication wanted to pay homage to her while embodying the same characteristics.

In a, now deleted, IG post, the magazine argued that the Hindu Goddess’ symbols ‘resonate as much in modern times as they have through the centuries. Like Durga, Cardi B is a dominant female voice at a critical time.’
However, the internet was not having it!
Many argued that the picture was ‘disrespectful’ and ‘insensitive’ and Cardi was quick to notice the outrage.
In a series of videos she then posted on her IG Stories, the rapper shared her apology: ‘When I did the Reebok shoot, the creative were telling me, ‘You’re going to represent a Goddess, that she represents strength, femininity and liberation, and that’s something that I love and that I’m all about. And though it was dope, if people think I’m offending their culture or their religion I want to say I’m sorry, that was not my intent. I do not like disrespecting nobody’s religion. I wouldn’t like people to offend my religion.’
She went on: ‘When people dress as Virgin Mary and Jesus, as long as they do it in a beautiful, graceful way and a respectful way, I don’t feel a certain type of way But I wasn’t trying to be disrespectful, maybe I should have done my research. I’m sorry, I can’t change the past but I going to do more research for the future.’
