Captain Sir Tom Moore has been bombarded with fan mail - but the knighted war hero is still waiting for offers of romance.

The centenarian, who raised £33million for NHS charities, is optimistic that some of the 180,000 cards he received for his 100th birthday in April, or some of the 200,000 letters sent his way might be from flirty admirers.

“We haven’t opened all the letters yet. But I haven’t had any marriage proposals - or not yet, anyway!” joked the war hero.

Captain Sir Tom married his late wife Pamela at the age of 50, and the couple retired to the Costa del Sol.

They moved back to the UK for Pamela to receive care after she developed a degenerative brain disorder, and he visited her every day and fed her meals until she passed away in 2006.

Speaking to the Radio Times, Captain Sir Tom says: “I don’t know why I left it so late to be married. You have to wait until you find the right person, and we had two beautiful daughters.”

“Pamela was a very pretty girl and charming and kind to everyone. I loved her and really looked after her for the rest of her life.”

He has previously described how Pamela, an office manager, looked “like a model” when they met and fell in love.

He has also said of his wife: “Pamela loved nothing more than a trip to Marks & Spencer. That was her dream day out, so we did that a lot.”

Captain Sir Tom became a national hero after walking 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday to raise funds for the NHS.

He initially aspired to raising £1000, but drew more than £30million when his endeavour captured the nation’s hearts.

He was “overawed” to be given a knighthood by the Queen last month. Captain Sir Tom also tells the magazine that while receiving his knighthood, he joked how he asked The Queen “not to be too heavy with the sword”.

He has also been given the freedom of his hometown of Keighley, West Yorkshire as well as the Freedom of the City of London.
